Spot the Posidonia Meadows

Posidonia, calledseagrass’ by the local fishermen and sailors, is known in Greek mythology as the ‘grass of Poseidon’, the ancient Greek God of the Sea and is one of the oldest living organisms on the planet! Don’t miss the amazing opportunity to dive by the Posidonia meadows, and  discover their remarkable formation of roots, flowers, fruits, and leaves just like the plants on dry land.

Lungs of the Ocean

Posidonia meadows are an invaluable treasure to the ocean’s ecosystem and the quality of the coastline environment which is why they are often described as the lungs of the sea. Meadows can retain more carbon than a healthy Amazonian rainforest and by doing so they help maintain the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea.

A home for Marine Life

The long leaves of Posidonia meadows are home to various marine species, like an underwater rainforest. Along the coastline of MarBella and Nido you will spot starfish, hermit crabs, perka, urchins, corals, blenny fish, anemonies and sponges. We invite you to discover the richness of the meadows through our snorkeling experiences run by the  MarBella animation team. Alternatively, why not use your own snorkel  and get exploring!
